There is a race on the Noordplas now.
The Noordplas Rondje. Twelve marks, a lap of 2256 metres, three laps. It is half as long again as the Zuidplas Sprint and it does not race like it: long legs down the east shore and back up the west, one real corner at the south end, and a chicane in the reeds just before the line. On the sprint you are braking every few seconds. Here you are flat out for a long time and then you are not, and getting the one corner right is most of the race.
Which circuit is on is decided by whoever starts one. There is no menu and nothing to choose from: nothing anywhere asks you which course you would like. Both circuits are marked all the time (they have to be, or there would be nothing to cross) and while the plas is quiet, taking either start line enters that circuit and closes the other until it is over. Whoever turns up late joins the race that exists, whether they cross the line or press JOIN.
If nothing is running, the panel tells you about the circuit you are nearest. Sail toward the marks you can see.
Times are kept per circuit. A 1500 metre sprint and a 2256 metre round are not two attempts at the same thing, so each keeps its own fastest lap and its own fastest race. Nobody's Zuidplas time is going to sit at the top of the Noordplas board.
And you have to stay on it. Get more than three hundred metres from the nearest mark, and stay there for twenty seconds, and the marshals have the boat back and your race is over. Until that rule existed there was nothing at all stopping somebody entering a race and driving to the other end of the plas in a boat the marshals had lent them, leaving the field to run the whole thing with a permanent entrant who was never coming back. Three hundred metres is comfortably outside either circuit (on a lap you are never more than half a leg from some mark), so it cannot catch a spin, a stall or a blown corner.
The water police still send a boat out to whichever one is running, and it still runs the course the wrong way round.
