You will be doing something else at the time. That is the whole idea.
There is a submarine on the Vinkeveense Plassen. Twenty-two metres of black hull with a conning tower on it. It comes up somewhere on the plas, lies there for two or three minutes, and goes back down. It is on no map, nobody is standing in it, and it is never in the same place twice: it only moves while it is under, where you cannot see it do it. If you want to see one you have to be out on the water when it happens.
There is also a way to get the police off you. Freedom is twenty metres of rusting steel with somebody's house built along the whole of the deck, a long low room with a shorter one set back on top of it, both flat-roofed, a scaffolding-pole awning over the lot, a chimney, a water butt, a string of lights and three palm trees growing out of the deck. It works a round of three spots in the legakkers at walking pace, lying up at each of them for a minute or two, and it has been doing that for years. Lie alongside it and the water police cannot see you, cannot clock your speed and cannot come and bump you: your heat comes off the way it does in the legakkers.
Thea does not see you either. The trick is getting there with the law already on you.
And there is Bootje Kroket. A rondvaartboot in the shape of the snack, breadcrumbs and all, with a striped awning over the benches. Hold the interact key alongside and you are aboard: you stand on her deck, your own boat comes along astern on a tow, and the guide tells you things about the lake for as long as you stay. Hold it again and you step off: your boat is right behind you, wherever the tour has got to.
She will not take you with a star on you. Passengers do not commit offences, and a tour is not somewhere to hide from a chase.
Look up, too. There is a helicopter and a light aeroplane over the plas now, and you hear both of them before you find them. Get to four stars and the helicopter comes and holds station over your boat. It does nothing. It is just there.
The aeroplane is from a club, and the club has a problem: two or three times an hour one of them does not make it home. Engine out, nose down, seven seconds of smoking spiral, and it goes into the water, with a real bang, and whatever is floating nearby takes it.
Nine kilometres an hour. Still strictly enforced, even under the flight path.
